Accidental Leadership: What It Is & How to Fix It

Leadership isn’t always a promotion. Sometimes, it’s a curveball. 

Not long ago, I joined Imogen Wilson on the Under the Hood podcast with Accountants Daily to explore a leadership challenge that’s often overlooked — but increasingly common: accidental leadership. 

It’s a term I use to describe leaders who didn’t plan to lead, but found themselves in leadership roles anyway. Not because they chased a title or trained for it — but because they were good at their jobs. 

We see this everywhere. In accounting. In advice. In financial services. High performers get promoted — and then suddenly find themselves managing people, making decisions, and being held accountable for culture, performance, and team outcomes. And yet, they were never truly set up to succeed. 

What is Accidental Leadership? 

An accidental leader is someone who steps into a leadership role without the formal training, coaching, or preparation needed to lead effectively. 

They’re often brilliant at what they do — but leading people isn’t the same as delivering results solo. And without support, that gap quickly shows. 

In the podcast, I shared a few of the telltale signs: 

• Team engagement starts to dip 

• Communication breaks down 

• The leader feels isolated or overwhelmed 

• They’re unsure how to give feedback, have tough conversations, or drive performance 

Why This Happens — Especially in Fast-Paced Organisations 

In today’s high-pressure environments, promotions often come fast. Businesses reward technical excellence — but leadership isn’t technical. 

It’s relational. 

It’s emotional. 

It’s built on self-awareness, not just expertise.
