The Five Love Languages: A Fresh Lens on Leadership and Sales

Earlier this year, I joined Darren Mitchell on The Exceptional Sales Leader Podcast to talk about lessons in leadership and sales. That first conversation touched on a theme very close to my heart – the power of connection – and we alluded to a follow-up episode where we’d dive deeper into the Five Love Languages.

True to our word, Darren invited me back recently for that second conversation – and it was another fabulous, thought-provoking exchange. I’d love to share some highlights with you.

Why the Five Love Languages Matter at Work

While the concept of the Five Love Languages is most often linked to romantic relationships, the principles translate powerfully into leadership and sales. As I wrote earlier this year in Connection is the Heart of Leadership, when we understand how people feel seen, appreciated, and supported, we unlock higher engagement, stronger trust, and healthier relationships.

In sales, that can be the difference between a one-time transaction and a lifelong client. In leadership, it can mean the difference between a disengaged employee and a thriving, motivated team member.

Love Languages Unpacked

Here are some of our key reflections:

  • Words of Affirmation – Many leaders underestimate the power of simple, authentic encouragement. For clients, it might be acknowledging the trust they place in you. For teams, it’s recognising effort as well as results.
  • Acts of Service – In sales, this is about doing the small things that make a client’s life easier. For leaders, it’s rolling up your sleeves when your team is under pressure.
  • Receiving Gifts – This isn’t about extravagance. It could be as simple as sending a handwritten note, a coffee voucher, or a small token that shows you’ve been listening.
  • Quality Time – In a fast-paced world, being fully present is one of the rarest gifts you can give. For a leader, it means showing up in one-on-one conversations without distractions. For clients, it’s taking time to deeply understand their needs.
  • Physical Touch – In a professional context, this translates to creating warmth and connection. A handshake, eye contact, or leaning in with genuine interest builds rapport in powerful ways.

Delegating Connection

One of the highlights for both Darren and I of the conversation was the powerful links to be found between connection, these love languages – and delegation.  We pointed out how leaders can’t delegate the responsibility of connection.

As a leader, to be successful over a sustained period of time, we must learn to delegate, and delegate without fear. This requires us to know our people exceptionally well, and deeply, so that we are not setting them up to fail, but rather setting them up to excel.

To do this well? It pays to understand what their preferred love language is. You can delegate tasks and processes, but when it comes to building trust and relationships, that has to come from you.

Delegation is a subject I’m passionate about unlocking the magic within – if you’re interested in finding out more on empowering employees through effective delegation, check out my best-selling book here.

Final Thought

The Five Love Languages give us a practical, human framework for strengthening relationships with our clients and our teams. They remind us that leadership and sales are not just about strategy and results – they’re about people.
