As we move into the final stretch of the year, I’ve been having a lot of conversations with leaders and professionals who are feeling out of control.
The pace quickens, the deadlines stack up, and suddenly everything feels urgent. It’s the pointy end of the year – and it can feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders.
In these moments, I often hear the same questions:
“How do I stay calm when everything around me feels chaotic?”
“How do I cut through the noise and actually get things done – for myself and my team?”
It’s something I’ve wrestled with too. Because being a great leader or professional isn’t about having control over everything – it’s about knowing what isn’t in your control, and choosing to focus your energy on what is.
Out of Control Design
That’s why I want to share a simple but powerful tool I often use with clients – the Out of Control Design.
This design helps you pause, reframe, and reset your perspective when things feel overwhelming.
How It Works
Take a moment to reflect on what’s out of your control:
- What other people think of you
- The past
- How others take care of themselves
- The outcomes of your efforts
- The actions of others
- The opinions of others
- The future
- What happens around you
Now, shift your focus to what’s in your control:
- How you spend your free time
- How you speak to yourself
- Your thoughts and reactions
- How you handle challenges
- What you give your energy to
- The goals you set
- Your boundaries
The Energy Shift
When you draw this distinction clearly – even just by writing it down – something powerful happens. You start to release what’s weighing you down, and re-anchor yourself in what truly matters.
This isn’t about detachment or indifference. It’s about discernment. About recognising that your power lies not in controlling everything, but in choosing where you place your attention and intention.
Putting Design Into Practice
For leaders, this clarity is contagious. When you can model calm, focus, and self-awareness – even in chaos – your team follows suit.
And for professionals, it’s the foundation of confidence and connection. It allows you to show up fully for your clients, without being consumed by what sits beyond your influence.
So as the year edges toward its close, take a moment to pause. Reflect. Reframe.
And if you need a hand, download the Out of Control Design – a simple, practical tool to help you regain clarity and focus when things feel uncertain.
Because while we can’t control everything, we can always control how we show up – and that’s where true leadership begins.
