Oxygen Masks First: Why Self-Care Is the Foundation of Self-Leadership

As a coach, a business owner, and a mum to two amazing daughters, I’ve come to understand something the hard way: you can’t show up fully for others if you’re constantly running on empty. And when it comes to sef-care self-leadership, the truth becomes non-negotiable.

There’s this pressure – especially for high-achieving professionals – to just keep pushing. To serve your clients, back your team, and hold everything together. But the truth is, leadership isn’t about being everything to everyone. It’s about knowing how to take care of yourself, so you can lead from a place that’s grounded, intentional, and real.

That’s why I believe self-care is far more than a personal wellness practice – it’s a leadership skill.

And it’s why our Leadership Excellence Program starts with Leading Self.

As our newest LEP cohort begins their journey with beautiful symmetry this Thursday 24th July on International Self-Care Day ( a date that by design – 24/7 – is a symbolic reminder that self-care should be practiced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) – it feels like the perfect time to talk about what it really means to put your oxygen mask on first.

Self-Care ≠ Bubble Baths

Let’s be honest -self-care has been reduced to surface-level clichés. But real self-care? It’s deeper.

It’s having the self-awareness to know when your energy is off.
The discipline to protect your time.
The courage to say no without guilt.
And the emotional intelligence to regulate yourself when everything around you feels messy.

One of the visuals I love is the Self-Care Iceberg – because the most powerful self-leadership practices are the ones you can’t see. Things like reflection, self-compassion, and asking for help. These aren’t soft – they’re smart.

The 6 Focus Areas of Leading Self

In LEP, we begin by helping leaders build the most important foundation of all – themselves.

Leading Self is about mastering the mindset, habits, and internal clarity that support sustainable leadership. Because how we lead ourselves shapes every decision we make, every conversation we have, and every moment of influence we step into.

Here’s what we focus on:

  1. Prioritisation & Focus – Cutting through the noise and focusing on what truly matters.
  1. Habit & Rhythm – Creating the daily leadership rituals that support clarity and performance.
  1. Leadership Presence – Understanding how others experience you – and showing up with impact.
  1. Emotional Intelligence – Reading the room, managing reactions, and leading with empathy.
  1. Energy & Wellbeing – Learning what fuels you and how to lead without burning out.
  1. Boundaries & Self-Leadership – Protecting your time, energy, and focus – so you can serve from strength.

These aren’t optional extras. They’re the foundation of everything else.

They’re how we show up with clarity, care, and consistency – whether it’s with a client, a team, or our own families.

What This Means for Client Engagement

This isn’t just relevant for leaders of teams – it’s critical in client service too. For financial professionals, planners, or consultants, your ability to hold space, listen deeply, and earn trust is directly impacted by your self-awareness and energy:

  • A calm, emotionally intelligent presence builds safety.
  • A clear mind makes better decisions.
  • A grounded leader creates confident clients.

You can’t give others clarity or courage if you don’t have it yourself.

What You Can Do This Week:

  • Block 15 minutes to check in with yourself (mind, body, energy).
  • Revisit your boundaries – what’s serving you, and what isn’t?
  • Ask: “What does self-care really look like for me right now?”

Self-leadership isn’t a box to tick. It’s a way of being.

And the more we invest in it, the more we have to offer those we lead, serve, and support.

Because Leadership Matters.
