Lately, I’ve noticed a theme that keeps surfacing in coaching sessions, workshops, and conversations with leaders across industries – values.
Not in a lofty, abstract sense. But in a real, practical, human way.
Leaders are asking questions like:
“Why do I feel off balance?”
“Why do I find it hard to make decisions lately?”
“Why do I sometimes struggle to connect with my team – or even with clients?”
And almost always, the answer leads back to values.
Research & Psychology
Research in psychology and organisational behaviour consistently supports my thinking and teachings. Values act as internal compasses that guide our behaviour, decisions, and emotional responses. When someone’s actions conflict with our core values (like accountability or honesty), it triggers discomfort, frustration, or even conflict – because our sense of “right” and “wrong” feels violated. Studies on values congruence show that alignment between personal and organisational values increases satisfaction and trust, while misalignment fuels tension, disengagement, and turnover.
When we’re clear on what we stand for, decision-making becomes easier. We find direction faster. We build trust more naturally – because our actions and words line up. But when our values are misaligned – when what we’re doing doesn’t match what we believe in – things feel wrong. We get frustrated, disengaged, or start to question our path.
That’s why I’m sharing this week’s Values Exercise – a simple yet powerful tool I use with leaders and teams to help them define what truly matters.
It’s a practical way to reflect on the moments you’ve felt happiest, proudest, and most fulfilled – and uncover the values that sat beneath them.
Because values drive growth.
They shape how we lead, how we work, and how we connect with others.
Leading Self: Values as the Foundation of Influence
In our Leadership Excellence Program, we explore values deeply as part of Leading Self – the first of three leadership pillars.
Before we can influence others, we must understand what influences us.
This pillar helps leaders:
- Clarify their core values and align them with their goals
- Build self-awareness and integrity as the foundation for influence
- Create a strong personal and professional brand rooted in authenticity
Our next cohort begins in February 2026. It’s a practical, powerful journey for leaders ready to step up, show up, and create real impact.

Sales Excellence: Values in Action
Values don’t just drive leadership – they also drive connection.
In our Sales Excellence Program, we work with financial professionals to help them understand not just what their clients value, but why.
When we seek to understand value, we must recognise that value is always subjective – it depends on the individual. Our behaviours are driven by our values and beliefs, our thoughts and our feelings. Even deeper than that, people are driven by their needs and fears.
That’s why great advisers don’t just sell advice – they uncover what truly matters to the person sitting across from them.
They connect value to meaning. They listen for what clients need most – and where dissatisfaction might motivate change.
When you understand your own values, you’re better equipped to understand and connect with the values of others. That’s where trust – and transformation – begins.
