Connection is the Heart of Leadership

As Valentine’s Day approaches this week, I’m energised by what truly drives great leadership: relationships.

In workplaces increasingly defined by hybrid and remote teams, fostering genuine connection is more critical than ever.

In my work with leaders across various industries, I’ve seen time and time again how connection can make or break a team. Leadership thinkers like Simon Sinek and Brené Brown consistently emphasise the human side of leadership. As Sinek puts it, “Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.” Connection is at the heart of this care, and it is what transforms leaders into trusted, respected mentors.

Love Languages

One powerful framework for building connection comes from Gary Chapman’s “The 5 Love Languages.” Though originally designed for personal relationships, they offer profound insights for leaders aiming to create deeper bonds with their teams. Here are some of my suggestions on how you can apply them:

  1. Speak their language. Whether it’s through a word of encouragement, helping solve a problem, or recognising someone’s hard work with a small token of appreciation, the key is to meet people where they are. Each team member is unique, and leaders who adapt their communication and appreciation styles are more likely to foster strong connections.

I often encourage leaders I work with to reflect on the preferences of their team members—what lights them up and keeps them motivated.
  2. Model vulnerability and trust. Brené Brown’s research on vulnerability shows us that connection begins when we let down our guard. Share your challenges and listen deeply to your team’s concerns. It’s in these moments of authentic connection that trust is built.

I’ve found that when leaders share their own experiences openly, it invites their teams to do the same, paving the way for deeper, more meaningful collaboration.
  3. Make time for your team. Quality time can be as simple as a one-on-one conversation or as structured as a team-building exercise. In either case, your willingness to invest time signals that you value your people as more than just employees.

During coaching sessions, I like to remind leaders that even a short, focused interaction can leave a lasting impression.

When teams feel seen, valued, and understood, they perform at their best. Connection isn’t a “nice-to-have” – it’s a leadership imperative. And the fabulous news: it’s a skill you can absolutely cultivate!
