As summer fades and autumn arrives, I’m reminded how much leadership mirrors the rhythms of nature. The shift in seasons isn’t just about cooling temperatures and changing leaves—it’s about renewal, adaptation, and stepping forward with purpose.
This past week, as I celebrated my birthday, I was given some beautiful flowers from my team and a friend I helped over the weekend. Beyond their beauty, they made me pause and reflect—leadership, like nature, flourishes when we nurture growth, embrace change, and create the right conditions for transformation.
It’s been a fitting reflection, as we also kicked off our Leadership Excellence Program last week. Watching a new cohort of leaders step into this journey—ready to challenge themselves, build new skills, and create meaningful impact—has been incredible. Leadership isn’t about standing still—it’s about evolving, embracing change, and, most importantly, offering hope for the future.
Last month’s 2025 Gallup Report found that hope is the number one need followers seek in their leaders—more than trust, stability, or even compassion. Hope isn’t just optimism; it’s about giving people a sense of direction, belief in the future, and confidence to navigate change.
Just as nature moves through cycles of renewal, great leaders embrace moments of transformation. As we transition into autumn, here are three key leadership lessons we can take from this season:
Shedding What No Longer Serves
In nature, trees release their leaves to make way for new growth. As leaders, we must do the same. Are there old habits, outdated strategies, or limiting beliefs you need to let go of? Autumn is a reminder to clear space for what’s next.
Embracing a New Season of Hope
With shorter days ahead, hope becomes even more important—both in life and in leadership. Gallup’s research found that when leaders fail to provide hope, people disengage and even suffer. But when leaders inspire hope, thriving increases, and uncertainty feels more manageable.
Hope isn’t about false promises—it’s about helping your team see a path forward, investing in growth, and fostering belief in what’s possible. How are you creating that sense of hope for your team?
Strengthening Connection and Purpose
As the season shifts, it’s a chance to reconnect—with your team, your purpose, and what truly matters. Leadership isn’t just about execution; it’s about people. Take time to check in, have meaningful conversations, and reinforce a culture of trust and collaboration.
So as we step into this new season, ask yourself:
What will you let go of?
What will you nurture?
And how will you lead with hope?
And if you or your team are ready for your own season of renewal, our brand-new Accelerated Leadership Program is already filling up fast for our May and September 2025 cohorts!
