How Communication Goes Wrong

Unfortunately, communication can go wrong at times. And when we don’t get our message across effectively, it can cause many issues in the workplace.

Here are a few reasons why communication can go wrong:

1. If communication is not clear or trusted, things can go wrong.

As leaders, it’s important to remember that not everyone receives messages the same way. Therefore, the way in which we communicate and how we communicate is something that every leader should have on the top of their development list.

This may require different messages for different people to ensure that your message is well received. It’s also important to build trust within your workplace so that your people listen and act when you speak.

2. If you use the wrong medium, things can go wrong.

It’s important to realise that whenever you are communicating with a person, the medium you use to communicate your message is just as important as the message itself.

If you use the wrong medium, your message may never get through to the receiver or may be misunderstood (which is what we experience so much).

When deciding which of the business communication media would be best for your message, you should take into consideration:

  • The Purpose of Communication
  • The Receiver
    (We have to consider the context of the communication, the experience of the receiver, and their background. Once you know this, then you can consider how that might impact or change your communication style or the amount of information you provide at any given time).
  • The Type of Information that we have to Communicate.
