Five ways to boost team morale

Your team are your greatest asset. You know it, I know it – but do they know it? Richard Branson says “A company’s employees are its greatest asset and your people are your product” . Their good work and loyalty can fail to get the appreciation and recognition it deserves and instead your team hear about the mistakes made or tasks missed – because this is what makes us stop amid the busyness.

For any of you who have been in this work environment as an employee, you will know that resentment, conflict and dissatisfaction can quickly grow and spread like wildfire through your organisation.

Work can be stressful enough; it is essential that we uplift and encourage our team not only to get the most out of them but also to make our organisation one that people love working for. To help you engage your team, here are ways to boost your team morale.

1. Develop clear goals

Developing clear goals builds passion, collaboration and trust within your team – essential ingredients for team morale. It also ensures that everyone is working together for a common purpose not individually on conflicting priorities.

The start of the New Financial Year is a great opportunity to remind and realign your team with your vision and goals.

2. Inspire passion

When your team are passionate, inspired and genuinely excited about their work, they will work harder, faster and better. They are more likely to go above and beyond for your clients and view problems and objections as opportunities.

Passion is contagious, and it’s what keeps your team motivated and performing well regardless of setbacks or lulls. Loving what you do also encourages a culture of never-ending improvement because people want to do what is needed to get the best result.

3. Quit micromanaging

The quickest way to destroy morale in your team is to micromanage your team. While it may be difficult to resist the urge to interfere, you did hire your team for a reason. You recognised their capability and experience to do the job you hired them for – so let them do it.

By letting them own their mistakes, take responsibility for their role, you will find as many great organisations have, that your people will thrive and rise to the challenge – and be happier for it.

4. Engage a Team Coach

As a qualified and experienced leadership coach I do a lot of individual coaching, but I am seeing a huge need for group and team coaching. Individual coaching generally focuses on individual effectiveness, but team coaching focuses on performance of the team.

Team coaching has many benefits and can help with improving team performance, building trust, accountability, increasing staff engagement and encouraging innovation.

5. Lead by example

Be a leader people want to follow. Your team need to see you model the behaviours and morals that you have agreed are essential and underpin both your organisation’s success and team values every single day.

Communicate in the way you want your team to communicate. Respond to challenges and conflict in the way you want your team to respond to them. Lead with the courage and integrity you want your team to have. Treat your employees in the same way you want your team to treat clients.

Your example will have a significant impact on how your team acts and responds. Think about it; what you are silently communicating and endorsing to your team through your behaviour, words and actions?

Over to you, how do you increase team morale in your organisation?
