Leadership in Uncertainty: What Crossing a Street in Vietnam Taught Me

We just returned from Vietnam where I had the privilege of keynoting at the Lifespan Annual Conference, catching up with my team for some team building, and enjoying a family holiday with my girls. One evening I faced a moment that perfectly captured the rhythm of life and leadership there.

I found myself in the middle of a crazy busy Vietnamese street at 7 pm in Ho Chi Minh. Traffic never stops, and at first it felt terrifying. I remember saying to my girls, “Let’s just not cross, I can’t do this, what if we get hit? What if we die?”  I know, dramatic, but that’s how my body responded. My adrenaline was racing, my mind full of what ifs, and I wondered if I or my girls would make it across safely. It was honestly the most frightening thing I have ever done, even more than the Singapore Sling or the Batman Rollercoaster.

Then something remarkable happened. In the chaos there was a rhythm, a flow. Motorbikes and cars moved around me, I moved with the traffic, I did not run, I did not panic. Everything worked. I realised that this culture embraces fluidity. There is no rush, no anger, no aggression, just a silent understanding that we all have the right to be there. Life moves as one and we can too.

It struck me as a powerful leadership metaphor. Sometimes we cannot control everything around us, but we can move with what is happening. Leadership is not always about forcing the way forward. It is about reading the flow, trusting others, and knowing when to step, when to pause, and how to navigate complexity with calm and confidence, even when on the inside you feel anything but calm.

Sharing this video as a reminder that great leadership often comes from staying present, moving with the situation, and trusting that everyone has a place in the flow. Sometimes letting go of control is the most powerful way to lead. I need to do this more myself, but I also thought it might have a lesson in here for you, too.

Because leadership today rarely feels predictable.

You’re navigating different personalities, competing priorities, constant change… and often, it can feel just like standing in the middle of that busy street – trying to work out when to move, when to pause, and how to lead with confidence through it all.

That’s exactly why we created the Leadership Excellence Program.

It’s designed to help you strengthen your ability to lead in real time – to build trust, deepen connection, and move with clarity (even when things feel uncertain).

Our next July intake is approaching, and we’ve opened the waitlist.  With less than 5 places left for 2026, don’t miss out!

There’s no pressure or commitment – just the opportunity to stay close, receive early access, and decide what’s right for you when the time comes.

And if there’s one place this “flow of leadership” shows up most?

It’s in how we connect with others.

Because not everyone moves the same way.

In today’s multi-generational teams and client relationships, understanding how different people communicate, engage and build trust is critical to leading well.

We’re diving into this in our Multi-Generational Leadership Webinar – happening tomorrow.

We’ll explore:

  • How different generations prefer to communicate
  • What drives engagement across age groups
  • Practical ways to strengthen connection with both clients and teams

If you’ve ever felt like you’re leading in different directions at once… this will help you find the rhythm.
