A Great Model for Communication

The 5 W’s & H Model for Communication

The 5 W’s & H model was developed by a journalist. It’s no surprise that someone whose job is storytelling understands the importance of communication.

And the same rule applies for communicating inside an organisation. If you want to ensure that you don’t forget critical details in your communication, then the 5 W’s & H Model will help you capture important perspectives, share the all-important context, and make it relevant for your audience.

The elements of the 5 W’s & H model are:

  • Why
  • What
  • Who
  • Where
  • When
  • How

In today’s blog, I want to focus on what is arguably the most important element – the WHY.

Whenever we think about a message we have to communicate we should always start with the “why”.

Simon Sinek, author of “Start With Why”, argues that your “why” tends to reach an emotional chord with audiences which can inspire the actions you desire. Sinek suggests that the most forward thinking organisations start with the conceptual and then go to the specific. People crave purpose. Communicating your why can help to get everyone on board, and helps them understand the impact of their work.

When you are thinking about your WHY, here are 3 questions you should ask yourself:

  • Why are we doing this?
  • Why now?
  • Why is it important?

I hope you enjoyed.

Be safe.
