One thing I love about my role is I get to share with leaders a model or a framework for any leadership challenge they have.  And trust there is a model or framework out there for them all leadership topics – feedback, managing under performance, coaching, communication and leading change is not different.     

It is called The Prosci ADKAR Model.  It is a goal-oriented change management model that guides individual and organisational change. 

ADKAR is an acronym that represents the five tangible and concrete outcomes that people need to achieve for lasting change: 

  • Awareness
  • Desire 
  • Knowledge 
  • Ability 
  • Reinforcement 

The ADKAR model is an effective tool for planning change management activities, equipping your leaders who are facilitating change, and supporting your employees throughout the change. 

The first step in any successful change program begins with the answer to one of the most basic questions about change: “Why?”  – AWARENESS. 

It is human nature to want to understand the reasoning behind an action or a required change.  

This is what we mean by “Awareness”. Building awareness as defined with ADKAR means sharing both the nature of the change and answering why this change is necessary.  

It means clearly explaining the business drivers or opportunities that have resulted in the need for change.
