Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of partnering with a large organisation on a significant strategic planning project.
What began as stakeholder interviews across the leadership group evolved into a two-day strategy workshop, the development of a Strategy on a Page, a communications plan, implementation recommendations, and a roadmap for the future.
As the work wrapped up recently, I found myself reflecting on what made the project so rewarding:
- It wasn’t the strategy document.
- It wasn’t the workshops.
- It wasn’t even the final outputs.
It was witnessing what happens when leaders create the space to step away from the day-to-day and genuinely invest in alignment, clarity and the future direction of their organisation.
One of the biggest lessons from the project was this:
Many organisational challenges are not capability problems.
They’re clarity problems.
They’re alignment problems.
They’re leadership problems.
And they’re often hiding in plain sight.
Through stakeholder interviews and workshop discussions, we found that many of the frustrations people were experiencing weren’t caused by a lack of effort, commitment or care.
Instead, they were being created by things such as:
- Unclear ownership and decision-making
- Inconsistent leadership practices
- Different definitions of success
- Fragmented information and systems
- Communication gaps
- Lack of shared expectations
Sound familiar?
These are challenges many organisations face. Which is why strategy work matters. Not because it creates a document. But because it creates alignment.
Five Things Every Good Strategy Process Should Include
1. Listening Before Planning
Too many organisations jump straight into solutions. The most valuable strategic work starts by listening. Stakeholder interviews, team feedback, customer insights and leadership conversations help uncover what’s really happening beneath the surface.
Good strategy starts with understanding reality.
2. Creating a Shared Definition of Success
One of the most common challenges we see is teams working hard toward different outcomes. A strong strategy creates alignment around:
- Where we’re going
- Why it matters
- What success looks like
- How we’ll know we’re making progress
Without this clarity, even the best people can pull in different directions.
3. Clarifying Roles, Accountability and Decision-Making
If everything needs to be escalated, nothing moves quickly. Great strategy work helps organisations answer:
- Who owns what?
- Who makes decisions?
- What are we accountable for?
- How do we work together?
Clarity creates momentum.
4. Turning Ideas into Priorities
Strategy isn’t a wish list. It requires difficult choices.
The most effective workshops move beyond brainstorming and identify a small number of initiatives that will create the greatest impact.
Focus beats complexity every time.
5. Planning for Communication and Implementation
The strategy is only the beginning. People need to understand:
- What’s changing
- Why it’s changing
- What’s expected of them
- How progress will be communicated
If communication is an afterthought, implementation often becomes one too.
What Strategy Work Reveals About Leadership
A strategy does not implement itself. A strategy is carried by leaders:
- Leaders create clarity.
- Leaders communicate the vision.
- Leaders navigate resistance.
- Leaders maintain momentum.
- Leaders turn strategic intent into operational reality.
That’s why the organisations that achieve the greatest success don’t invest in strategy alone. They invest equally in developing the leaders responsible for bringing it to life.
As we move into a new financial year, now is the perfect time to step back and ask:
- Does our team have clarity around where we’re going?
- Do our leaders have the capability to take us there?
Because strategy creates the roadmap.
Leadership determines whether you arrive.
